Dr. David Yaoga Sunu

As the Chief Operations Officer of Nationwide Medical Insurance, Dr. David Sunu oversees the quality and efficiency of medical services, manages claims processes to ensure accuracy and compliance, and fosters relationships with health service providers to drive improvement in care delivery while optimising spending. David has thirteen years of experience in medical practice, with the recent seven spent at the forefront of medical insurance and the telemedicine revolution in Ghana.

Prior to joining Nationwide Medical Insurance, David was the Global Chief Medical Officer at Milvik BIMA and was responsible for driving global mobile health strategies across key markets including Ghana, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.

Before being named as Global Chief Medical Officer, David was the Country Manager of Redbird Inc., a health tech, with the mission of ensuring that patients across Ghana accessed healthcare easily and conveniently through the provision of easy access to digital health records at community pharmacies.

David had earlier spent 5 years with BIMA Ghana as Chief Medical Officer and Head of Telemedicine, where he led the mobile health and microinsurance company to set up and scale a fully functional telemedicine service. He was responsible for the regulatory, medical, and human resource requirements for a telemedicine license as well as its strategy and operations. He also served as acting Country Manager for 5 months and a board member of Milvik Ghana Limited for over two years.

Previous to his work at BIMA, David was the resident medical officer at Urgent Care Hospital in Accra, where he provided medical cover for both routine consultations and emergencies. He was also responsible for ensuring continuous improvement in health outcomes and the commitment of staff to the ethics of the medical profession. Before his appointment at Urgent Care, he worked at the Eastern Regional and 37 Military Hospitals as a house officer.

David’s passion for imparting knowledge motivated him to take up part-time teaching appointments at the School of Social Work. He also taught the Physician Assistants sophomore class at Pentecost University. The courses he taught included Human Growth and Development, HIV/AIDS and Psychosocial Counseling, and Health Law and Ethics.

David holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of London, a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Ghana Medical School as well as a Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree from the University of Ghana.
